Maisto
has answered just that question while sharing with us an example of
how they replicated a model.
First,
the models are made out of resin. At this stage, any changes that need to
be made are easily done.

Once
the tooling is approved, the next step is to create a finished diecast model.

As
you can see, the tooling of the model is much larger than the finished product.
This
Maisto model was replicated in 1/64 scale. Can you image how big the
tooling would be for one of Maisto's 1/18 scale cars?
